Elveden Memorial Service to Maharajah Duleep Singhqqqqqqq

On the 23rd October 2009 a small and intimate service was officiated at the graveside of Maharajah Duleep Singh in remembrance to him on the 116th years anniversary of his death. Local dignatries and Sikhs attended to mark this ceremony held at Elveden Churchyard

The memorial service arranged by the Walsall-based 'Anglo Sikh Heritage Trail' was held at Elveden Church, and attended by the Mayor of Thetford, Curator of Thetford Museum Oliver Bone, and Councilor R. Kybird whose great grandfather was head gamekeeper to Duleep Singh and a bearer at his funeral. There was also attendance of prominent members of the local Thetford community and Sikh community, including Harbinder Singh Rana and members of the Duleep Singh Centenary Trust, accompanied by a Sikh Priest from the Midlands who read a small prayer.

The service was officiated by Mr Rana with some aptly spoken words about the Maharajah and his time in the area, while the Mayor layed flowers at the Maharajah's grave and conducted a 2 minute silence in the memory of Duleep Singh. Thereafter flowers were placed by the Sikh Priest a tour of the church was given by the Rev. Nevill Turner.

The Church was specially opened for the midday memorial with guests allowed to have a tour inside by the Rev. Turner whose grandfather had also been a gamekeeper on the Elveden Estate to Lord Iveagh, and recorded in his 1953 publication 'Memoirs of a Gamekeeper' of meeting the Maharajah shooting with frineds on the grounds when he was a young boy. The service was followed by a small reception at Thetford's Bell Hotel with surprise guests being a touring Sikh party from Peterborough.
